OCEAN KEYS

Inline playgrounds are one of the most challenging formats in commercial placemaking. They must deliver meaningful play value while respecting the operational realities of a live retail environment, circulation, visibility, noise, safety, and tenant adjacency. The Ocean Keys inline playground is a case study in how thoughtful design can elevate a transitional space into a purposeful, high‑performing asset.

Ocean Keys Shopping Centre sought to enhance its family offering without sacrificing valuable mall floor space. Blanc Space responded with a design that treats the corridor not as a constraint, but as an opportunity to create a linear, discovery‑based play experience that unfolds naturally along the shopper journey.

A Space That Works Harder Than Its Footprint

Turning Movement Into Engagement

Rather than clustering equipment in a traditional footprint, the design stretches play moments along the mall’s natural flow. This creates:

  • Micro‑zones that support different types of play

  • Natural pacing that encourages children to explore progressively

  • Reduced congestion, as children disperse along the line rather than clustering in one spot

This approach transforms a simple walkway into a dynamic, family‑friendly experience.

Play Value Without Visual Clutter

Inline playgrounds must remain visually permeable. The Ocean Keys design uses:

  • Low‑rise structures to maintain sightlines

  • Soft curves and sculptural forms that feel integrated, not intrusive

  • A cohesive palette that complements the centre’s interior design

The result is a play space that feels intentional and premium, not chaotic or visually noisy.

Designed for Caregiver Comfort

Caregivers are the decision‑makers in dwell time. The playground supports them through:

  • Clear visibility from all angles

  • Seating opportunities nearby, encouraging longer stays

This creates a sense of ease that directly contributes to repeat visitation.
