OUTDOOR PLAY
WATERGARDENS, VIC
2022
Taylors Lake, VIC
A Playscape Designed for Everyday Adventure
The Outdoor Play Space at Watergardens brings colour, movement, and sculptural form into the heart of the centre’s dining and leisure precinct. Designed as an open‑air destination for families, the space blends topography, tactile materials, and bold geometry to create a play environment that feels energetic, contemporary, and distinctly Watergardens.
This project transforms an underutilised outdoor zone into a vibrant community anchor — a place where families pause, play, and reconnect between retail, dining, and everyday life.
Design Intent
The design draws inspiration from natural landforms and urban play, combining soft mounding, integrated slides, tunnels, and climbing elements to encourage full‑body movement and imaginative exploration.
Key objectives included:
-
Creating a high‑visibility, high‑impact play space that draws families into the precinct
-
Designing for multi‑age engagement, from toddlers to early primary
-
Integrating durable, low‑maintenance materials suitable for outdoor conditions
-
Ensuring clear sightlines for caregivers across the entire play zone
-
Embedding colour, texture, and sculptural form to create a memorable identity
The result is a playscape that feels both architectural and playful, with forms that invite climbing, sliding, balancing, and social interaction.
A Community‑Centred Outcome
The Watergardens Outdoor Play Space has quickly become a high‑traffic family destination, supporting dwell time, repeat visitation, and a more vibrant outdoor precinct. Its sculptural forms and bright colour palette create a strong visual identity, while the play experience itself encourages movement, imagination, and social connection.
This project demonstrates how considered design can transform an everyday outdoor area into a meaningful community asset — one that feels welcoming, energetic, and built for families.
